An exclusive interview In today’s world, we hardly find people who are ready to do something new and come out of comfort zones and face the challenges, and reach for their dreams. People are usually calculative when it comes to risk taking, but there’s this one group who has surpassed all the hurdles and reached the success which no one could’ve imagined. This group is the first ever boy group of Kazakhstan or Qazaqstan, called ‘Ninety One’, who are also known as Тоқсан бір (Toksan Bir) locally, in their country. They not only became an idol group, but also the pioneers of the genre Q-Pop, which obviously means Qazaq Pop. The group is signed under Juz Entertainment, a Kazakh record label owned by Producer, Yerbolat Bedelkhan, who himself is a member of 90s Kazakh boy group, ‘Orda’.
The group was formed in the year 2014, which then was known as KTI Boys, because both of their rappers were selected through K Top Idol project, but before their debut in 2015, they changed their name to Ninety One, which not only became an attraction, but also irked some people because, 1991 was the year when Kazakhstan finally got it’s independence from the USSR.
The group member consists of AZ, Alem, Ace, Zaq and Bala. They debuted with their first song Айыптама (Ayptama: Don’t judge!) along with the music video which was published in Gakku TV, a Kazakh music channel. In an exclusive interview with Amy from ETC, these pioneers of Q-Pop in Kazakhstan, share about their musical journey, there learning experiences and their love for Bollywood and especially Mithun Chakraborty.
AMY: What is Q-Pop in your opinion? Q-Pop is becoming more popular and what makes it unique from other genres?
NINETY ONE (91): Salem! Q-Pop is not a genre, it’s a movement. For us Q-Pop is freedom, new point of view and unity. Q-Pop is 21st century’s nomads. The first difference of Q-Pop from other movements is language, the second is lifestyle. Combination of these two gives the sound, the visual and the style of presenting information. We see how Q-Pop spreads rapidly and we’re really over the moon, sometimes below.
AMY: Do you know that you all now have a star in the galaxy? Actually, there are two stars which rotates around each other and it’s named Ninety One and EagleZ. How do you feel about it ?
91: We were really surprised by the idea. Even if we wake up 91 times, the thought of our and EagleZ’s names being in the sky have never crossed our minds. We’d like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the person who did this. This act is an indication of sincere love and freedom.
AMY: If you go international which all countries are in your list as of now ?
91: To be honest, we want to go galaxy wide. We want to visit and give our concert on every planet. Earth is the first stop.
AMY: How do you guys prepare for concerts and tours, because it’s not an easy task?
91: When you do what you love, you don’t get tired. And we haven’t shown all of our potential yet.
AMY: How would you describe your journey from Ayptama to Men Emes? What kind of controversies did you all face and how did you all overcome ?
91: If you listen to the songs from that period, you can see how our inner world changed. When we first started, we faced a lot of misunderstanding, people even organized protests against us. But EagleZ’s love was more sincere compared to these people’s intentions. You can find out more about this in our movie called 91 and in Men Emes documentary. Right now, all these misunderstandings and rejection is a past. A very funny, interesting and surprising past.
AMY: Are you aware of the fact that Ninety One is actually making an impact in the lives of the fans and listeners? The song Bari Biled was well appreciated here in Sikkim (India) too, because of the same issues as portrayed in the video. So, are you happy with the impact that you all are making?
91: Yes, we are very happy with the impact, but the impact of Bari Biled should not only be in words, we would like it to be in action as well. In general, we are very glad that our beliefs are making impact in people’s lives, opinions and the way they think.
AMY: Alem, how did ‘The Voice of Kazakhstan’ help you in becoming an idol?
ALEM: Every competition increases your ambition, and at this competition, I met and was invited by a co-producer of Juz Entertainment. Then, I became a trainee and these competitions helped me go through all the hardships I faced before debuting.
AMY: Ace, as we all know that you were a trainee in South Korea for a K-Pop idol project, but can you tell us what motivated you to become part of Ninety One?
ACE: I decided to try my luck in my country, and don’t regret my decision. Here, I am in harmony and they understand me well and it gives me creative growth.
AMY: AZ, describe your journey from
‘K Top Idols’ to leading Ninety One.
AZ: From K Top Idols to Ninety One, there were a lot of interesting, exciting tiring, happy and unbelievable moments. I am not going to tell everything. I want to keep it to myself.
AMY: Zaq, tell us what Жас Отан (Zhas Otan) is, and how do you wish to work for your country?
ZAQ: Zhas Otan is a youth organization created by the ruling political party of our country. Everything I do now, I do for the youth of this country. It’s not only me, everyone of us does the same, because art is what develops culture.
AMY: Bala, as the youngest member of the group, how do you see yourself? BALA: Since I became the youngest in Ninety One, I found a special place in my life. Being the eldest son, I got used to the responsibilities since a very young age. However, in Ninety One, I am the last person to take responsibility and that makes me feel good.
AMY: What do you think about India and Bollywood? Any movies that you’ve watched? Do you wish to hold a concert here?
91: Bollywood is very popular in our country. Watching Bollywood movies used to be a trend, therefore, we see Mithun Chakraborty as our first choreographer and ‘Sita aur Gita’ was the first movie which we watched. Of course! We want to come to India, because it is also earth and we are ready to reach our main goal.
AMY: Now, that you’ve met your global fans in your concerts how was the experience ?
91: When we met foreign, Eaglez at concerts we had very warm feelings, we were nervous and meeting the person who is in the same wave as you and who lives in the other side of the planet. It is a very special and unforgettable moment.
AMY: Is it true that with stardom comes responsibility?
91: We don’t really like the word stardom, but yes, artistes have a lot of responsibility. Also, there is equal responsibility between the artistes and the people who are in the same wave.
AMY: How do you feel when foreign EagleZ sing in Kazakh ?
91: Music has no language. When things like this happen, this is the proof that there is no language in music.
AMY: What is your perception of a foreigner wanting to be a Q-Pop idol? Is it possible?
91: Of course, we think it’s good and we believe that this is possible.
AMY: Any artistes with whom you all would love to collaborate in future?
91: We want to collaborate with the artiste from Galaxy DDO210 and the one who has mastered the inter galactic ultrasound and whose name we can’t name yet.
AMY: What message would you love to give your fans?
AZ: Make your dream your goal.
ACE: Thank you for supporting us. You helped us in difficult situations and inspired us. We will never get tired surprising you with our creation.
ALEM: Music is a tool of communication that isn’t divided by religion and nationality. It’s a magical power that doesn’t know distance. To the listeners who reached out to us and who are on the same wave, I want to say- Namaste! It was nice meeting you. Be happy!
